2020 Film/Music Explosion!: Call for Proposals

Film/Music Explosion!: Call for Proposals

Since 2003, the Film/Music Explosion! has opened each night of the 3-day Artifact Film Festival. The Film/Music Explosion! is an opportunity for local emerging filmmakers to create a Super 8 film based on a song. Each film is accompanied by a live performance of the song during the festival.

This year’s Film/Music Explosion will feature the following bands:

Jiajia Li: "A Spring Morning" (Presented by CJSW)

Classically-trained flutist Jiajia Li is being praised as "one of the city's finest and most adventurous flautists”. She was the 2016 recipient of Canada’s “Juno” music award micro grant and a multi-time scholarship recipient from Banff Centre. Since her arrival in Calgary in 2014, Jiajia has forged her identity through music and performance, cutting across a wide range of modern musical experimentations and traditions. Currently a faculty member at the Mount Royal Conservatory, Jiajia is an active performer and has appeared in festivals including Sled Island, Calgary New Music Festival, and The Works. MORE.

I have decided to do this piece called “A Spring Morning”, written by composer Stephen Yip in 2015. The inspiration of this piece was influenced from one of the Chinese 300 Tang Poems, Haoran Meng’s original poem, “A Spring Morning”. “This morn of spring in bed I am lying, Not woke up till I hear birds crying. After one night of wind and showers, How many are the fallen flowers! Composer designed four main short sections in which to depict each line of the poem as the basic structure of the entire piece. Some of the words from the poem were used to signify as singing or reciting role in this piece in order to create two voice part: flute and human voice. In the first two sections, he attempted to portray the meaning of the nature character and spring seasonal time. In the third and fourth sections, he tried to imagine the sensational and emotional approach of the poet, allowing his invisible timeline was suggested to pass through the past and the present occasion.

Locutus: "SLVRY" (Presented by Mission Tattoo Parlor)

Locutus is: Jeremy Dow (Bass Six), Pablo Puentes (Bass) and Fraser Wright (Drums)
